My First Serious Side Project: Fusion Knights (Tenative Title)

I recently started work on what I consider my first serious project outside of my school work. Last year at GDC 2013 I came up with an interesting concept for a game that I was really excited about but didn't have the time to follow up on. Over the winter break I finally decided to sit down and start chipping away at some of the prototype. The concept is pretty simple. Two players controlling they're own avatar have the ability to combine together to get over difficult obstacles and defeat larger enemies. There's a lot more to it than that but I don't feel comfortable revealing all my mechanics at this stage in development.

So far all I have is basic player movement, and a top down camera system. The player moves relative to which way the camera is facing and the camera is positioned in a "Top down" 2.5d style similar to Super Mario 3d World on the Wii U.

2d art is not my strong suit but I drew up some quick concepts for the 2 main characters. I just wanted to get the idea across as to how the appearance of the "Fused" character is supposed to look like a combination on the two split avatars. I'm definitely going for a cartoony style with a modern day fantasy setting. I have some friends that are willing to help me with the game art so hopefully I'll have some nicer looking character concepts soon.

I'm using the Unity 3d game engine and I'm using C# for the scripts. This is the first game I've worked on where I feel my scripts are actually organized and efficient. I'm very excited about how it's shaping up so far. Next up in the pipeline is to script a basic attack, variable jump height, and start getting the second player ready. After that I'll create a basic fusion action and see if the idea is a bust or not. If it turns out to be a fun mechanic then I'll proceed with the rest of the project. More updates soon.
